Embarkation Information:
If you are booking a bareboat charter without a skipper there will be a detailed chart briefing on your cruising area and also a thorough briefing on your yacht, its operation and the equipment aboard. This will be held at the base prior to you taking charge of the yacht. For the novice sailor we recommend an instructional skipper. Please note that if during the briefing the base decides that you must have a skipper, you will need to pay the additional amount applicable directly to the base. When adding crew to a bareboat, remember that your crew will require berths and provisioning for the duration of your charter. Since there are a limited number of cabins aboard each of the yachts, please be certain that the number of people in your party PLUS the number of crew you intend to hire do not exceed the maximum for the boat you would like to charter.

Sample Itinerary
Day 1. Noumea to Ilot Signal
Ilot Signal is just 8.2 nautical miles due west of Port Moselle Marina. With the normal trade winds you can sail this downwind leg is less than two hours. Leave in the morning to enjoy a walk around the island, a picnic, and a swim.
After lunch, a 4.5 nautical mile sail downwind will bring you to Ilot Mbo where you can explore the lovely beach and do some snorkeling on the reef. Then circle Ilot Mbo and beat back into the wind for two miles to anchor behind Ilot Mbe for the night. This is an excellent and well protected anchorage with good holding.
Day 2 Ilot Mbe to the Pontoon
This 5 mile leg of your cruise is into the wind so if you are sailing you will need to do some tacking. Stay clear of the reefs to the west of this route, there is plenty of water to the east. When you approach the Pontoon you'll have clear water to see the patch reefs in the area.
Pontoon to Ilot Laregnere
After an enjoyable morning and lunch at Le Pontoon tack over to Ilot Laregnere where you can pick up a mooring in the lee of the reef. Like Ilot Signal, this is a marine reserve with a nice white sand beach.
Day 3 Ilot Laregnere to Ilot aux Goelands
This is a short 5.7 nautical mile upwind beat where you will anchor in one of the most beautiful lagoon anchorages in New Caledonia. The deep sand offers excellent holding in 3 to 5 meters. Again, take care not to anchor in the coral or allow your chain to damage the patch reefs.
Ilot aux Goelands to Ilot Maitre
Just a little over three miles from the anchorage at Ilot aux Goelands, Ilot Maitre offers some excellent snorkeling, not to mention a fine gourmet restaurant at l'Escapade Island Resort.
Ilot Maitre to Noumea
Ilot Maitre is only 3 miles from Port Moselle Marina and this is almost always a downwind run or a broad reach.
New Caledonia Cruise 5 Day South Lagoon Cruise
This is a cruise for people with 5 days to explore the New Caledonia's South Lagoon and Ile Ouen. You can do it on your own sailing vessel, charter a sail or power boat in Noumea, or hire a smaller motor boat and camp on the islands.
From late July until September you will have the possibility of seeing whales in this region.
The distances are reasonably short, just a few hours sailing for each leg of the journey, and the rewards are spectactular with a menu of white sand beaches, sparkling clear water and colorful coral reefs. While these anchorages are excellent in nice weather, they can be hazardous in unusual weather conditions. Fortunately you are within an couple of hours sailing of protected anchorages from anywhere on this cruise.
Sample Itinerary
Day 1 Noumea to Ilot Mato
The first leg of this cruise is 27 nautical miles to windward and will involve some close tacking. It is best to start at dawn before the afternoon trade winds begin. Take care passing the shoals on the route. They are marked and emerge at low tide. You must arrive at Ilot Mato no later than 15:00 hrs to be able to see the reefs; an absolute necessity when cruising in the Southern Lagoon of New Caledonia.
Day 2 Ilot Mato to Ilot Ua
Wait until you can easily see the coral reefs in Mato (normally around 09:30) before starting on the 10 nautical mile upwind sail to Ilot Ua and the 5 iles. There are several submerged reefs along this route. They are reasonably easy to see as long as you have good visibility. Take extra care and keep a good lookout.
Day 3 Ilot Ua to Ilot Kouare
Spend the day exploring the 5 isles and Ilot Kouare just 4 miles upwind. The coral reefs are excellent and the beaches lovely. You can find a protected anchorage at Ilot Kouare by moving to different locations around the island.
Day 4 Ilot Kouare to Bonne Anse
From Ilot Kouare you will be sailing to Bonne Anse in Baie du Prony, about 32 nautical miles. Most of this will be well off the wind. You will be in deep water but there are plenty of submerged reefs so you'll need reasonable visibility and good charts. The Cruising Guide to New Caledonia shows the routes in this area. This is the most likely area to see whales during their stay in New Caledonia waters from July through September.
Day 5 Bonne Anse to Noumea
The 35 nautical mile return to Noumea takes you through Canal Wooden and, depending on when you leave, and the wind, you may have time for a stop at Ilot Baily for a swim and a little exploration of this marine reserve. Alternatively, you might stop at Ilot aux Canards and snorkel the underwater trail before heading back into Noumea.
